What is Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that views the mind as a system of different inner “parts” guided by a core, compassionate “Self”. Developed by psychologist Richard Schwartz in the 1980s, IFS suggests that having multiple sub-personalities is completely normal. When you feel torn—such as when one part of you wants to eat healthy, but another part wants to eat junk food—you are experiencing different inner parts.

Core Concepts of IFS
  • The Self: The undamaged, calm, and compassionate center of who you are. IFS aims to have the Self lead your inner system rather than letting extreme parts take over.
  • Exiles: Vulnerable inner child parts that hold painful memories, trauma, fear, or shame.
  • Protectors: Parts that try to keep you safe from the pain of exiles. They split into two groups:
    • Managers: Proactive parts that try to keep life under control (like perfectionists or critics).
    • Firefighters: Reactive parts that act quickly to distract you when painful emotions surface (like binge eating or numbing out).

What is IFS therapy and how does it work?

IFS, or Internal Family Systems therapy, is a trauma approach that conceptualizes us into “parts” of self. You probably already speak in this language. For example, you might say “there’s a part of me that really gets anxious when…”, or “there’s a part of me that likes him, and another part that gets the ick.” In IFS, we view parts as serving a particular function. There may be a part that is protective, a part that puts out fires, and a part that feels vulnerable and exposed. In IFS, we treat the whole system with a goal to unburden parts of self, so that you start to understand yourself more and get back to living.

IFS is used effectively to treat panic attacks, depression, anxiety, trauma, and PTSD. Feelings of being stuck, avoidance, self harm, and other destructive behaviors.

IFS sessions are like talk therapy, but with more structure, and sometimes mindfulness or meditation is used to map out your parts. Your therapist will work with you to determine the best approach for Parts mapping with you, whether this is meditation, cards if you’re a visual learner, or following a script. After you’ve mapped out your parts, subsequent sessions look like getting more information from each part, understanding why this part is present in your system, and unburdening the part.

You and your therapist will work together to unblend parts, unburden, and help you understand yourself better. If you notice a part coming up now trying to anticipate how sessions will go… this is good information to tell your therapist! 😉Â
